How did you get started in the world of silversmithing?

I’ve had a passion for jewelry and sparkly natural stones since I was very little. Whether it be customizing my own pieces, collecting antiques (I have a few very cherished Victorian era rings, Art Deco Rings, and even some from the Roman Empire!) or just whimsically admiring other artisans works as I research more about the art.

I am fascinated by the evolution of styles and history behind jewelry. Metalsmithing is an ancient craft and one I was eager to explore but never felt a calling until recently! I was inspired to take a DIY workshop much like GILDED offers today over in Utah and felt so inspired to continue practicing my craft. Once I got the hang of it, I just knew this is something the Tampa community would love.

There have been many times in my life where I have felt intimidated or underqualified to start something – but the journey really does begin the minute you make the first step forward. I find silversmithing to be a very rewarding and therapeutic practice for me.

What specific techniques and methods do you specialize in?

I am self-taught so I specialize in the “google, research, mess up and learn for next time method” LOL. I like to channel my inner Bob Ross; one of my favorite quotes of his being: “There are no mistakes, only happy accidents. All you need to paint is a few tools, a little instruction, and a vision in your mind.”

Are you more of a classic silver lover, or do you play around with different types? What's your go-to?

I have a special connection to gold. A lot of our historical understandings of ancient civilizations have a clear line to gold being used for spiritual purposes and status symbols and I find the folklore mesmerizing. However, I am also a silver lover! I find it more versatile to work with so I tend to mix metals in my work a lot.

Have you worked with different jewelry designs/styles, or do you have a signature style?

I’ve been really into modifying picture jasper stones lately. The stones remind me of nature’s artwork. Picture jasper is also a powerful grounding stone that promotes connection to the earth. Some view this stone as a direct message from the Earth itself, instilling a sense of proportion, bringing comfort, alleviating fear and cultivating harmony. I couldn’t agree with that more!
